The 8 Content Disposition Decisions in a Redesign

During a major website replatform, lifting and shifting outdated pages creates bloat and dilutes your search authority. A formal inventory allows your team to assign every single legacy URL to one of eight proven actions:

  • Retain: High-performing evergreen content that remains accurate and requires no textual alteration.
  • Refresh: Content that is structurally sound but needs updated statistics, fresh testimonials, or minor copy polish.
  • Rewrite: Core service or capability pages whose positioning has fundamentally changed and need a complete overhaul.
  • Consolidate: Multiple short, thin blog posts or overlapping service pages merged into a single authoritative pillar guide.
  • Redirect (301): Legacy URLs being permanently moved to a new destination to preserve historical backlink equity and search ranking.
  • Archive: Outdated seasonal campaigns or retired news items preserved offline in company archives but unpublished from the live CMS.
  • Remove (410 Gone): Dead utilities, obsolete tools, or broken legacy endpoints that should explicitly return HTTP 410 Gone.
  • Create New: Critical capability gaps or market landing pages identified during competitive audit that do not currently exist.
